Aydarkul lake is a geographical wonder, arisen in the south-eastern edge of Kyzylkum desert.
Previous times only excess of drainage water from Jizzakh steppe merged into a basin with saline soil. But in summer of 1969 disastrous high water in Syrdarya river exceeded Chardara reservoir capacity and water filled basin. A lot of fish, birds and mammals appeared in the lake.
Today, Aydarkul lake has more than 3000 sq. km., length is about 250 km and width from 8 to 15 km. Banks and islands of the lake attract a lot of migratory birds. Also there are huge cormorant and pelican colonies. Aydarkul lake district has good conditions for walk and hiking, horse and camel riding.
