It is hard to overestimate the role of reserves, national parks, wildlife preserves and nurseries created to protect the flora and fauna of Uzbekistan. There is a broad network of conservation areas in Uzbekistan covering a wide diversity of biocoenoses and ecosystems.
Given below is the list of Uzbekistan reserves:
- Chatkal National Reserve;
- Hissar National Reserve;
- Nurata National Reserve;
- Surkhan National Reserve;
- Zeravshan National Reserve;
- Kyzylkum National Reserve;
- Zaamin National Reserve;
- Kitab National Reserve;
- Lower Amudarya State Biosphere Reserve.
The two national parks of Uzbekistan are:
- the Zaamin National Park;
- the Ugam-Chatkal National Park.
The Ecological Centre "Jeyran" aims at breeding rare animal species.
There are 12 wildlife preserves (Dengizkul, Oktau, Kara-Kir, Arnasay, Saygachiy, Sudochye, Mubarek, Karnabchul, Koshrabat, Nurabad, Kumsultan and Khadicha).
The total area of conservation territories amounts to 20,520 km2 (5 % of the total area of Uzbekistan).
The nature of Uzbekistan is highly diverse and represented by the Tien Shan, Hissar and Alay mountain systems, the Kyzylkum desert, steppe regions and riparian forests.
The fauna of Uzbekistan is represented by 600 species of vertebrates, which are comprised of 97 mammal species, 424 birds and 58 reptiles. The Uzbekistan flora is represented by more than 4,100 species of higher plants. Some rare animals may be found at the ecocentre "Jeyran" and the Zeravshan, Nurata, Surkhan and Amudarya reserves. These are centres for breeding rare species of animals, such as the Kyzylkum sheep, markhor, goitered gazelle, Przewalski’s horse, kulan, houbara bustard and others.
The conservation areas also serve as a natural base for scientific research and observation.
The natural beauty of reserves and national parks attracts millions of tourists from around the world.
Unfortunately, not all of the Uzbekistan reserves are open for tourists so far, but the national parks can easily be visited.
